Solar power is currently the cheapest form of electricity for more than 70% of the world’s population and a key pillar of the world’s efforts to decarbonise the energy system. Even in the UK, solar power is now an economically viable source of power without government subsidies and before any consideration is given to the environmental benefits of harvesting electricity directly from the sun.
Photovoltaic solar power systems can be installed with just a few panels on residential roofs, larger systems on commercial rooftops, ground-mounted arrays of several acres on agriculturally poor land or in mile-wide arrays in deserts. The ability of this technology to function at any scale is key to its success.
The continued fall in prices for solar systems and battery projects enables solar power to be used more extensively.
